Passports & Visas

Any person visiting Tanzania is required to have a return/onward ticket and a valid passport or entry/re-entry visa that has been duly endorsed. Visitors from some Commonwealth countries and a number of specified countries are not required to have visas. These are the countries are listed below:

Health

Valid vaccination certificates for Yello Fever are required for visitors who originate from or transit through Countries endemic with yellow fever. Those who arrive directly from Europe, the USA, Japan, and other non-yellow fever countries are not required to produce the vaccination certificates to gain entry. We advise everyone coming to Tanzania to get a comprehensive and medical insurance cover including anti-malaria tablets.

Customs

  • Your personal effects including binoculars, cameras, and film may be temporarily imported free of duty.
  • Custom bonds may be demanded from visitors who bring in professional video/filming equipment, radios, tape recorders, and musical instruments to ensure that the goods are re-exported when you leave.
  • You need to obtain a special permit well in advance for any firearms.
  • Ensure that you keep cash sales receipts and ownership certificates for any local handicrafts bought in the country and wildlife trophies for presentation to Customs officials on departure.

Currency

The official unit of currency is the Tanzania Shilling (TShs) with denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000. Visitors can come with any amount of foreign currency but amounts over USD 10000 must be declared at the border to officials before entry.

Note that it is a crime to import or export Tanzania Currency. You can exchange your foreign currency (cash or traveler’s cheques) at commercial banks, authorized dealers or bureau de changes operating at the international airports, major towns, and border posts.

Weather & Climate

Tanzania’s climate is tropical.

  • Coastal areas: Hot and humid with an average day temperature of 30 degrees Celsius or 86 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Central areas: Dry and arid with hot days and cool nights.
  • Northwest highlands (Arusha & Ngorongoro areas): Temperate and cool between June and September. Long rains from March to May and then short rains between October and December. Hottest months fall between the months of October and February

  • No daylight savings

Language

  • Tanzania’s national language is Kiswahili
  • English is widely used especially in foreign interactions
  • Local translators can be hired where necessary for any language translation to Kiswahili

Clothing

  • Mostly light tropical clothes (cotton slacks, shirts, and skirts)
  • Warm clothes are necessary for the higher altitude areas like Ngorongoro Crater, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and Arusha
  • Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended when on safari
  • Zanzibar: Dress modestly especially when you are outside the hotels, beaches, and resorts. Avoid revealing clothes such as swimsuits and miniskirts.
